Length
Measuring with a ruler When we measure the length or height of an object, we can use a ruler. A ruler is 1 foot (12 inches) long.
When using a ruler to measure, line up the edge of the ruler at zero (usually they don't say zero, but we know that it is right before 1!) with the edge of the object Then, count up to the number where the object ends. About how many inches is this blue crayon? (1) Sometimes objects don't land perfectly on a number, like this pencil. This pencil is not just 7 inches, it's a little bit more. How long is this pencil? (2)
(1) This crayon is exactly 3 inches
(2) This pencil is 7 and a half inches, or 7 and two fourths inches. Third grade students need to know how to measure in halves and fourths of an inch. |

-Click "Easy Inches" for practice with whole inches and half inches. -Click "Medium Inches" to add in quarter inches. -For an extra challenge, click "Hard Inches," which goes beyond what we've learned in third grade and adds eighths of an inch. "Super Brain" adds sixteenths. Challenge QuestionWhen something is too big to be measured using feet, or even yards (one yard is 3 feet), we use miles! How many feet are in a mile?
Challenge Activity: Click on the word 'Google' on the map above. A new page will open with a larger map of Armada. There is a scale in the bottom, left corner of the map that shows you how much length on the map is equal to how many feet in real life. When you zoom in and out (use the + and - bar), the scale changes.
